Chapter 7

All New Country

After checking out the house, Charles walked out and saw the men standing around.

“Those of you that want to work for me need to be doing something,” Charles said as he looked at them.

“And you,” Charles said as he looked at Joe as he stood there holding the broken neck of the whiskey bottle, “Either clear out, or get dressed and get to work.”

As the men began moving Charles asked Hollis to take him for a ride to ranch #2.

Hollis led the way as they rode past the barn and across a large green pasture towards the base of the mountain.

As they rode, Charles noticed many cattle grazing in a pasture near a river.

A wooden bridge spanned the river, and they rode over the wooden bridge and began climbing the foothills on a narrow path that wound through the trees and huge boulders.

The white flags of whitetail deer tails bounded away from them and disappeared into the woods as they climbed the path.

Soon they reached the crest of the ridge, and they stopped. Charles looked back at the ranch; he thought it was a beautiful sight, the green pastures, the river, and hundreds of cattle.

“Ahead,” Hollis said as he pointed, “You can see the river running from north to south. The area to the left would be ranch #2, and the land on the right would be ranch #3.”

“Let’s go to ranch #2 first,” Charles said as Hollis led the way down the trail to the base of the mountain.

They rode to the river, and Hollis led them to another wooden bridge that spanned the river.

As they continued east Charles saw a dozen longhorn cattle near the base of the mountain.

“Don’t go near them,” Hollis warned Charles, “That bull will charge and gore your horse, and if your horse falls he’ll kill you.”

They stopped and gazed over at the cattle as the bull walked out and began snorting and shaking his head.

“We found a dead grizzly over there by that big rock last fall,” Hollis said, “The bull killed it, he tore that grizzly apart; don’t get near them, or that beast will kill you and your horse,” he warned.

“Harmon liked the old bull, he said it reminded him of him when he was younger,” Hollis added.

Charles looked at the bull, its eyes were red, and it appeared to be glaring at them, and the bull was covered in battle scars.

“So far, that old bull has killed 2 mountain lions and one grizzly that we know of,” Hollis said.

The bull began pounding his front feet into the ground and throwing dirt 20 feet in the air behind him as he snorted and shook his head.

“How much do you think that animal weighs?’ Charles asked Hollis as he looked at the bull.

“Harmon said he’s over 1200 pounds. Harmon branded him when he was about 6 months old, and he was a handful to handle then,” Hollis said as he chuckled.

They continued on to the ranch house as Charles looked back to make sure the bull didn’t follow.
